Television troubles

So I have a lot of DVDs from the United States. I also have some Icelandic language DVDs, and now that my son is here, I would especially like to watch those.

But of course American DVDs can only be played in American DVD players hooked up to American televisions. Icelandic DVDs can only be played on European DVD players hooked up to European TVs. There has to be a direct connection between two machines speaking the same language. If  you try it any other way, as it turns out, you waste a lot of money and get nothing but snowy pictures.

Þú þarft helst að eiga evrópskt sjónvarp og evrópskan spilara sem hefur verið aflæstur (flestir spilarar eru það reyndar). Þá er hann region-free og spilar bæði region 1 (USA) og 2 (Evrópa).

Einnig geturu niðurhalað VLC media player en þá geturu allavega horft á amerísku DVD-diskana í tölvunni.

Alls ekki. Svona var þetta með VHS, ekki með DVD.
Evrópskur region free spilari spilara ALLA diska region 1 eða 2 eða 3 eða hvað sem er og virkar bæði fyrir PAL (fyrir evrópsk sjónvörp) og NTCS (bandarísk).
Flestir spilarar hér eru region free eða hægt er að gera þá það með lítilli fyrirhöfn
Sama gildir um amerískan region free spilara, en þeir eru sjaldgæfari, minni eftirspurn eftir þeim

I bought a european DVD player, and put a european DVD into the DVD player. But it was hooked up to my American television. Therefore the picture scrolled and was black and white.

The DVD player I bought came with a code to make it region free, so that is not the problem. The problem was the American TV.

Þú þarft að athuga hvort að þú getir ekki skipt DVD spilarinum yfir í NTSC úr PAL B/G, sem er ástæðan fyrir því afhverju allt saman er svarthvítt hjá þér. Ef sjónvarpið hjá þér ræður við PAL B/G þá þarftu bara að skipta því þar.

Ef þú lætur mig fá upplsýingar um hvaða tegund að DVD spilara. Þá get ég sagt þér hvernig á að gera þetta, ef þetta er hægt á annað borð.

Well, since this seems to be of some interest, I will add in the bizarre tidbit that I got the european DVD player hooked up to my european television yesterday, and after a bit of fiddling around, it suddenly started working. Now this morning, after hooking up the sjónvarp to the TV too, the DVD no longer works. I think it is because I hit the HDMI button, only I cannot get it back off.

The silly little problems are never ending.

DVD spilarar nota Scart (AV) tengin á sjónvarpinu, ekki HDMI tengin og takkana á sjónvarpinu sem tengjast því.

Þú þarft ekki að ýta scart tenginu fast inn til þess að þetta virki.

The technical woes continue. Today I brought a printer cartridge, which should fit in my printer according to the number on the printer and the number on the packaging, but it turns out the cartridge is meant for the UK version of my printer, and my US printer refused to accept it. Thankfully, a friend of mine advised me that I could take the ink out of the one I just bought and put it in the old cartridge I had. After a bit of experimentation, and a bit of a mess, I managed to get it to work.

Dett í, ofan á, úr, út

I´m not sure if someone had dett í (gotten drunk), or if það bara dett ofan á (it just sort of happened), or if some dett úr (forgot), but at any rate, my household goods dett út (have disappeared). Let's review the chronology here. Early August packers from the shipping company arrive at the apartment in Moraga. They load my 4 large plastic containers and 8 cardboard boxes, plus one baby crib, into their truck. I watch my things depart. Twitterverse

Although this is a function of the specific feeds I have chosen to follow, I have observed that Icelanders are much funnier on Twitter than Americans are. Americans tweet their opinions on political matters in categorical, condemnatory terms, or they use Twitter to bolster their professional expertise, a la LinkedIn. So kudos to the Icelanders for understanding the potential of the medium and maximizing it.

The sky weeps

For the last few days, the sky here in the San Francisco Bay has been filled with smoke, blown this way from a fire 100 miles away. At least 40 people died in that fire, a whole town destroyed, and many others missing. One reporter described the sky over the town as raining down ash. On this day, the 100 year anniversary of the end of World War I, the news in the US is filled with stories of the man who calls himself President, unwilling to step out into the rain to lay a wreath. Unwilling to partake in our communal, world wide weep. And I'm thinking about my trip to Iceland on Thursday, of the carbon dioxide the plane will be spewing into the sky. My third round trip from SF to Iceland this year, and I don't have anyway to make up for my carbon footprint. But in all honesty, I'm also wondering how bad the weather will be, if I'll have to be out braving wind and snow for the shot the documentary film maker wants, of me walking around outside.
