Today the Icelandic parliament OKd a proposition allowing the foreign ministry to begin discussions of joining the EU. This was pretty big news, and I was excited to see how people would react to it. But my TV is broken, and my only way to get news is either from the internet or the radio. It was a nice day, and I had an errand to run in the city, plus Palmer was cranky wanky, so a drive seemed in order.

RUV's reporter was asking people on the street what they thought, and it really seemed everyone was positive about it. As one guy put it, at least something now is happening.

Something good.

Until not so long ago, in a land where almost nothing happened, every time something did happen it was a reason to party. Those days are long gone. Nowadays, every time something do happening, there is a reason to be worried. Did Iceland became just another country like the rest?

When the EU first formed, I was pretty convinced it was going to go the way of the United States, in other words, that all the states would loose language diversity and cultural diversity. But I think the EU actually has good policies in place to dissuade exactly that sort of thing from happening.

As an anthropologist, I hate to see cultural diversity diminish. Although as it usually turns out, that is always temporary anyhow. Culture finds a way to reassert itself.
