Life on an island

There is actually a lot to see here in Iceland, a lot to do. One does not need to leave the island to have all sorts of adventures.

I agree, water falls are beautiful especially in the winter. But I meant more some kind of activity.

In the winter time I like to watch the kids build snow men or go sledding, or even just try to walk in the wind and sleet. I like to wake up early and see all the people going to work in darkness, and coming home in darkness, I think it is amazing. I like to scrape the ice off my windshield. I like putting my iceskates in my car, and looking for a frozen pond. I like going to my aunt's house at lunch time to watch the sunset. I like watching to see how much the footprints in the snow last from day to day.

And actually, Icelandic culture is alive in the winter much more than in the summer. More Icelanders at the restaurants, more Icelanders at the music events, more Icelanders at the malls. Once the tourists come, the Icelanders begin to recede.

Except friends and family issues, most of what you wrote is true if you live in the Reykjavik area. Here in Olafsvik during winter everything just sleeps. The only coffee house we have is open only during summer and the bar we had closed its door for good last year.
