According to a recent news item, one-third of Icelanders write a blog, and two-thirds of Icelanders read blogs.  I am absolutely sure the statistic is not 1/10 (or 1/100?) of that in the United States. I've tried to come up with an anthropological explanation for this that is slightly more sophisticated than some sort of pop-psychology (all Icelanders are starved for attention), but I guess further fieldwork is required.  Of course the Nordic countries are very tech savvy, and this may just be an outgrowth of that.  It's a bit of a shame though; the U.S., which is not a very cohesive society, needs technology to connect much more so than Iceland.

Haven't a relatively large number of Icelanders published books as well? I think I remember hearing that just as a one-off from a professor, but if it's true, maybe it's all part of the same thing--the importance of literacy/literature, etc. in Icelandic culture.

Yeah, good point. Some of the blogs are indeed highly literate, though others are not.

On Icelandic doctors

My friends and family here in Iceland were very enthusiastic about me going to the krabbameinsfélag for an exam. I was really impressed how easy it was to get an appointment--booked online even! And when I got there this afternoon, the efficiency continued: they have a well oiled operation in place there, all very organized with computers asking questions and keyed lockers to keep one's personal belongings in. Then when it came time to see the doctor, well, that lasted all of 2 minutes. And I paid 3420 kroner. So I was overall a little disappointed. When I mentioned to the front desk clerks that I was wondering if it was possible to actually get an appointment where I could speak to a doctor, I was given a variety of phone numbers. None of the ones I called had appointments within the next 6 weeks. Mailing list

I seem to now officially be on the US Embassy mailing list, which is groovy. Embassies always have something going on that they invite people to, it is pretty much one of the main things they do. This Friday there is a reception aboard the USS Stephen W. Groves. I am considering attending, if they let me bring my son. Hann hefur gaman af þessu.
