Cognates

I mean I know the word in Icelandic for icecubes, "klakka".  And I know, very well since I was a child, the Icelandic word for icecream, "ís".  Still, as I dropped off the little boy who had hit his head on Gunnar's ship today with his brother, I suggested that he needed "ís" on his forehead. I blame it on the stress and excitement of the day.

You can use the word "ís" for frozen water as much as you can use it for frozen milk/cream.

Many Icelanders would ask for "ís" in the same circumstances

Polar bear = ísbjörn, does not come from their preference for icecream :)

So I guess they had some idea what you meant.

klakar eru notaðir í drykki, en ef það þarf að kæla eitthvað annað er talað um að "setja það á ís".
