The BIG news

In the midst of a world-wide financial crisis, the renewed specter of the cold-war, and an impending global climate disaster, the lead story today on mbl.is was that a group of guys who dress up on the weekends as Vikings have decided not to just do so during the summer, but all year long. I find myself torn between my professional-self, who feels any interest in the Vikings is very well justified, and my citizen-self, who wonders if there might be slightly more important things to talk about.

The men you are referring to have cause to celebrate! A contractor on Long Island N.Y. recently found an original horned Viking helmet while excavating for a septic system in a rural area on the eastern tip of the island. The exact location has been kept secret, but carbon dating of the surrounding soil indicates the helmut was discarded at the site around 975 AD. After thorough cleaning the words 'Made in China" were revealed. The contractor feels this won't have much bearing relative to questions regarding the helmut's authenticity. Ticket stubs to a 1998 Minnesota football game, found with the helmut, were dismissed as a crude attempt to discredit the authenticity of the find.
